My cats astro and gibbles

 These are my cats Astro and Gibbles. We got them when they were kittens, they were so cute. We made some nice little toys for them.
 They're brothers. They also had another brother or sister but we could't get it. That doesn't bother me. We loved them so much.
When we got them, they had a lot of fleas. We had to give them tablets to get rid of the fleas. We put the tabblets in their food and a few mins later the kittens had fleas just jumping off them, it was creepy and the cats didn't know what to do with themselves, they jumped and scratched. It was sore! In the end we had a few scratch marks.

I've decided to not just do bugs but a lot more so sit back and enjoy the blog.

Velvet ants

There are over 3000 different species of velvet ants.
The velvet ants aren't actual ants, they are wasps. The males have wings but no sting and the females have a sting but no wings. The males and females are so different from each other, not only in size but also appearance, that it is sometimes hard to tell that they are from the same species.
Some species of velvet ant can kill a cow with their sting, this is why velvet ants are sometimes called 'cow killers' now that is pretty scary!

Hawkmoths

Did you now that the hawkmoth, also known as sphinx moths or hornworms, are one of the fastest insects to fly. They are able to fly around 50 km/h (30 miles an hour)! The hummingbird hawkmoths can hover in mid-air as it uses its long tongue to drink the nectar from deep within the flowers, these moths are sometimes mistaken for hummingbirds.
There are around 1200 species of hawkmoths.

Queen balling

Sometimes bees will kill their queen this is called queen balling, this is where they squeeze around her in a tight ball until she overheats and dies. This is caused when a beekeeper puts a new queen in.

Hellish Hornet

The giant hornet from Japan lurks in East Asia's countryside. I know that sounds gross but it's pretty scary too.
The giant hornet grows to about 55 millimetres ( about the size of a adult human's little finger) and has a massive 6 millimeter sting, which carries strong venom that can kill allergic humans. As I've heard, the sting is like having a red hot nail being driven into your skin. OUCH!
This horrible hornet has a hobby of raiding honey bee hives and killing most of the bees inside by chopping their heads off with their powerful jaws.

Marching murderers

One of the strongest ants are the army ants that live in Africa and South America. Like most ants they live in big gangs. When they see something little in their path it had better run because they will kill it, eating them alive.

Bullet ants

Bullet ant, the ant with the most painful sting, it feels like being shot. Young men from the Satere-Mawe tribe who want to become warriors have to put on a glove with hundreds of the ants, they have to keep it on for 10 minutes. They have to put the glove back on another 20 more times before they are said strong enough to become warriors.

Tiger Beetle

Tiger beetles larvae live in vertical burrows. They hang out at the top and wait for their prey. Once caught they take it to the bottom of the burrow and eat it. Tiger beetles can be found in the daytime. They eat ants. My sister and I fed some ants to them.

The Jewel Beetle and the Weaver Ant

The jewel beetle and the weaver ant went for a race up a tree. They stood at the starting line and when the snail waved the flag they were off. The jewel beetle was in last place because the weaver ant had wove the jewel beetle's legs together, but the jewel beetle was to strong he broke the weaver ants work and the jewel beetle won the race by miles

Earwigs

Earwigs live and hide under stones and logs and piles of leaves. You might find as many as 100 under one log. Earwigs like to eat rotting fruit, vegetables and plants. The earwigs have a good chance of survival.
People used to believe that earwigs crawled into people's ears and made holes in their eardrums.
Earwigs are not suitable for crawling long distances. They often get from one place to another by hitchhiking in clothing, paper, wood, cars and all sorts!

Ladybirds

Ladybirds eat a lot of greenflies and a lot of other garden pests. The ladybirds are a big help to us.
The female ladybirds lay their eggs in batches up to 100-200. She lays them on the undersides of leaves.

Water Scorpion

Its called this because it looks like a scorpion and lives in water. But it is not a real scorpion.
It moves very slowly, crawling along the bottom of ponds and lakes. They can also swim.
Water scorpions grab their prey and suck their guts out using their tube-like mouth.

These are my bugs that I made out of pegs and pipe cleaners and pens to colour them in. I made some for Julian.

Insect collection

I started this insect collection with my Gran. I catch an insect in little tubs and put them in the freezer. When I take them out I put a pin through their thorax. The insects that are too small like ants and little beetles, I glue down.

Caterpillars

Ruby-tailed Wasp

The ruby-tailed wasp is a parasitic wasp. They wait for the Potter or Mason wasp to fly from their nest. Then they enter the nest and lay their eggs beside the other wasp eggs. Their larvae then eat the larvae of the other wasps. You are most likely to find them on walls and trees.

British Common Wasp

The common wasp can build it's nest in empty mammal holes. Their nests are all papery. They also steal honey from bee hives. I was stung by one of these on my elbow. I accidentally stepped on their nest and disturbed them. It was very very sore!

Firefly

The babies eat snails but the adults do not eat. All of them have wings but only the males fly. They fly once it gets dark and flash a light every second. The females sitting in the grass will flash back if they see a male's light.

Nicrophorus humator

If they find a small dead animal they dig the soil from underneath it, burying it. the female then lays her eggs on or beside the dead animal and the babies will eat it.

Bombardier Beetle

When its frightened this beetle fires hot liquid from its bottom you can hear a pop when it fires.

Green shield bug

Turns green in spring and goes bronze in autumn before hibernating. I have found some of these in England and in Spain.

Silverfish

This insect doesn't fly as it doesn't have wings. It is a fast runner and is covered in silvery scales. This one likes to live in dark cupboards and eat books and mould. It causes lots of damage.

Bloody nosed beetle

I think it should be called bloody mouth beetle because the blood doesn't come out of its nose it comes out of its mouth when it is frightened. This beetle doesn't fly and has very large feet.

Stick Insects

A stick insect eats its own skin after molting to recycle proteins and to keep their location a secret from predators.

Human Fleas

The Human Fleas have amazing, jumpy, springy back legs that work like elastic. They are the best jumpers of all and can jump up to 130 times their own height!

Common Field Grasshopper

The Common Field Grasshopper has huge legs, that make it jump off the ground. They catapult themselves over 500 times their own height. Their accelaration is 4 times faster than a space rocket taking off!

Click Beetle

The Click Beetle escapes from it's enemies by falling to the ground, normally landing on it's back. It has a device in it's body that makes it jump, and at the same time it makes a clicking noise. Sometimes it lands on it's back, and will have to jump again and again to get back on it's feet.

About Bugs Strength

If an ant was as big as a human, it would be so strong that you would need 10 people to match it's strength.

If the Dung Beetle was as big as a human, it would be nearly 450 times stronger.

The Rhinoceros Beetle is even stronger than the Dung Beetle. The Rhinoceros Beetle can support 8,500 times it's weight.

Jewel Beetle.

Jewel Beetles are sparkly and colourful. Sometimes people make them into jewellery but countries like Australia want to protect them.

Leaf Cutter Bee

Leaf cutter bees make their cells in little holes, hollow stems and even keyholes! They line their cells with neatly cut tiny pieces of leaves. Once made, the female fills the cell with pollen and lays her egg.

Wolf Spider.

Wolf Spiders are always hunting for food. This means the mommy spider carries her babies on her back while hunting. If something happens and the babies fall off, they just climb back on again!

Goliath Beetle.

The Goliath Beetle lives in tree tops in tropical rain forests in Africa. It is the heaviest beetle in the world and weighs as much as an apple! The Goliath Beetle is as big as your hand!

Wood Ants.

Wood ants build a mountain of twigs and leaves over their nest to keep their nest nice and warm and safe. They like to go to the top of the trees to find their food.

Weaver Ants.

Weaver ants make their nests with leaves. They weave the leaves together with silk that comes from an ant grub. Two worker ants help to weave the leaves together, which makes the nest.

Bulldog Ants.

Bulldog ants are the most dangerous ants in the whole world, and you can find them in Australia. They are very beastly, and can kill a human adult in 15 minutes. They kill with their sting!
